Vijay Raj is today a graffiti artist. He started off as a dancer. When he was fully into dancing, hip hop was the buzz word. It was part of popular culture and everyone was talking about hip hop. In his community, as he looked around, everyone was doing something. Either they were DJing or were rapping. So he wanted to chalk his own path as he was completing his engineering degree. So he chose graffiti so that he could be different from the rest. And the rest is history.

After learning the basics of graffiti art from an Americian, he started practicing it. That video that introduced him to graffiti art was a ‘timeless’ one that gave Vijay Raj enormous insight into the tricks behind it, impelling him to practice. He would scribble in sketch book after sketch book to master it. Then he had to reckon with the prevalent misconception that graffiti painting was illegal. People considered it as vandalism. He had to change the mindset. He had to make it acceptable. He struggled initially as there was no recognition for graffiti painting as an art form. He had even struggled to buy a can of graffiti paint. Yet he soldiered on.

The break came when he was called to do graffiti by SRM institutions. He grabbed the opportunity to prove himself and then he pushed himself to put in his best. His hard work earned the necessary recognition and he is today the country’s third best graffiti artist and has a slew of clients, for whom he beautifies blank walls or paint colourful images in specific spaces. He also charges them accordingly.

His charges differ if he undertakes the job solo. Yes, he now has a team of artists with whom he paints the town red, nay in Tamil too. As the fascination for everything Tamil permeated popular culture, Vijay Raj also felt the need to do graffiti in Tamil. People were taking about Tamil pride, Tamil music and so many things with ‘Tamizhanda’ resonating everywhere. So images of the turbaned Bharatiyar and the bearded Thiruvalluvar became part of his iconic work on walls. Words, too, took the Tamil hue and loud and clear messages emanated from the walls in clear Tamil. In fact, his was the first Tamil graffiti group.

He feels that through his Tamil graffiti he has a lot to teach others, from other countries and those speaking other languages. They come to him to know more about Tamil graffiti. And Vijay Raj is today a master.
